Physical Education Specialist

 
JOB SUMMARY
 
Camp Hapitok is a residential summer camp for 6 to 11 year old children with communication disorders who live in San Luis Obispo County. The PE Specialist will screen the perceptual motor abilities of the campers.  The PE specialist will prepare and conduct instructional materials and lessons incorporating body movement.  The PE specialist will coordinate special events for teen volunteers and assist in planning and coordination of other camp activities including fieldtrips.   The PE Specialist will insure safety and enforce camp rules. Perform other related duties as assigned.
 
QUALIFICATIONS
 
Required:
1. Valid adaptive and/or regular physical education California Credential, or equivalent; ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing.
a. Experience working with children, ages 6-18.
b. Valid California driver’s license.
 
Desirable:
1. Experience working with children who have special needs/communication disorders.
2. Experience with organizational skills.
3. Ability to recruit and communicate with community volunteers.
4. Experience working with teenage children.
 
KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES
 
Knowledge of:
 
1. Child guidance principles and practices related to perceptual motor activities for children.
2. Appropriate developmental levels of the perceptual motor skills children should possess.
3. Classroom procedures and appropriate student conduct.
 
Ability to:
 
1. Instruct and lead activities related to appropriate perceptual motor abilities for children.
2. Understand and relate to students with special needs and communication disorders.
3. Establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationship with others.
4. Communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
5. Demonstrate an understanding, patient and receptive attitude toward special education students.
6. Understand and follow oral and written instructions.
7. Observe health and safety regulations.
8. Demonstrate interpersonal skills using tact, patience and courtesy.
9. Maintain regular and reliable attendance.
 
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
 
1. Screen perceptual motor function of campers.
2. Develop daily small group activities with a thematic holistic approach for working with special needs language-impaired children.
3. Schedule and coordinate other camp activities, including supervising swimming at a public pool, supervise and motivate teen volunteers, and attend staff meetings.
 
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
 
1. Ability to move, jump, and demonstrate all of the perceptual motor functions that the campers and teens will be expected to perform.
2. Standing for extended periods of time.
3. Bending at the waist, kneeling or crouching to assist students.
4. Seeing to monitor student activities.
5. Hearing and speaking to exchange information.
6. Physical agility to lift 25 pounds to shoulder height and 50 pounds to waist height. Kneeling or crouching to assist students and carrying, pushing or pulling heavy objects.
7. Mental acuity to perform the essential functions of this position in an accurate, neat, and timely fashion; to make good judgments and decisions; and to evaluate the results of decisions and judgments.
8. Facility to drive a car.

RESPONSIBLE TO:
1. Collaborate with activity staff.
2. Submit lesson plans and reports to camp director.
