Evening Activities Director


JOB SUMMARY

 
Camp Hapitok is a residential summer camp for children ages 6-11, with communication disorders who live in San Luis Obispo County.  The Evening Activities Director will supervise campers and teen volunteers, organize and carry out group activities, insure safety, and enforce camp rules during the afternoon and evening hours. The Evening Activities Director will act as assistant to the Camp Director and be responsible for providing motivation and support to campers, teens and other staff.   In addition, the Evening Activities Director will be able to perform other related duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS
 
Required:
1. A valid California Credential in regular, special, or physical education, support services or equivalent.
2. Experience working with children, ages 6 - 18.
3. A valid CPR/First Aid certificate must be obtained prior to date of employment.
4. A valid California driver's license.
 
Desirable:
1. Experience working with children who have communication disorders.
2. Experience working in a residential camp setting.
3. Knowledge of sign language.
4. Experience in leadership roles.
5. Musical skills and talents.

KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES
 
1. Ability to manage and prioritize multiple activities.
2. Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing. Must be able to clearly express ideas, thoughts, and instructions to campers, teen volunteers, and staff.
3. Knowledge of indoor and outdoor recreational activities suitable for children.
4. Ability to work independently.
5. Ability to work as a team leader.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
 
1. Plan and conduct afternoon and evening group activities.
2. Supervise evening meals and singing activities.
3. Supervise bedtime.
4. Provide encouragement and support for campers and teen volunteers.
5. Enforce camp rules.
6. Ensure the health and safety of all camp residents.
7. Provide guidance and direction regarding behavioral issues.
8. Provide direction in emergencies that might include illness, injury, or behavioral difficulties.
9. Serve as a role model, provide encouragement and motivation, and assist teenage volunteers as they work with their campers.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
 
1. Physical ability to walk over uneven terrain.
2. Facility to sit at a desk, conference table or in meeting rooms of various configurations for extended periods of time.
3. Facility to see and read, with or without vision aids, a computer screen, printed matter, and to distinguish colors.
4. Facility to hear and understand speech at normal room levels, and to hear and understand speech on the telephone.
5. Manual dexterity to operate a telephone.
6. Facility to speak in audible tones so that others may understand clearly in normal conversations,  training sessions, presentations, other meetings and on the telephone.
7. Physical agility to lift up to 25 pounds to shoulder height, and up to 50 pounds to waist height; and to bend, stoop, climb stairs and to reach overhead.
8. Facility to drive a car.
9. Mental acuity to perform essential functions of this position neatly, accurately and in a timely fashion. Additionally, must be able to make good decisions and evaluate the results, thereof.
10. Manual dexterity to operate recording devices, operate equipment, handle animals, plants relative to the displays, exhibits, demonstrations, investigations and interpretative activities.
