Camp Director

 
JOB SUMMARY
 
Camp Hapitok is a residential summer camp for 6 to 11 year old children with communication disorders who live in San Luis Obispo County.  The Director coordinates all aspects of camp, including camp setup, execution and clean up.  The Director communicates with administers, Friends of Hapitok, staff, parents and teens to insure that program components are executed. The director insures that SLOCOE policy and procedures are implemented.  The Director manages the camp budget. The Camp Director is responsible for providing motivation and support to campers, teens and other staff.  
 
QUALIFICATIONS
 
Required:
1. A valid California Teaching Credential in regular, special, or physical education, or equivalent.
2. Experience working with children, ages 6 - 18.
3. A valid California driver's license.
 
Desirable:
1. Experience working with children who have communication disorders.
2. Experience working in a residential camp setting.
3. Experience in leadership roles.
4. Experience working with teenagers.
5. Experience in budget management. 

KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITY
 
1. Ability to manage and prioritize multiple activities.
2. Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing sufficient to express ideas, thoughts, and instructions clearly to student campers, volunteers, and staff.
3. Knowledge of camp program development and management.
4. Ability to work independently.
5. Ability to work as a team leader.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
 
1. Camp preplanning including recruiting staff and teen volunteers.
2. Provide training for staff and teen volunteers.
3. Have a strong knowledge and understanding of child development and management.
4. Coordinate and delegate all aspects of camp.
5. Communicate with SLOCOE administrators and Friend of Hapitok Board.
6. Communicate with parents of campers and teen volunteers.
7. Manage crisis as they arise regarding campers, teens and staff.
8. Observe and control behavior of campers according to approved procedures during both indoor and outdoor activities.
9. Ensure the health and safety of all camp residents.
10. Provide guidance and direction regarding behavioral issues to staff and teens.
11. Provide direction in emergencies that might include illness, injury, or behavioral difficulty.
12. Serve as a role model, provide encouragement and motivation, and assist staff and teenage volunteers to provide an educational and fun camp experience for children with communication disabilities.
13. Provide appropriate feedback to staff and teens about their work with the campers. 

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS 
 
1. Facility to sit at a desk, conference table or in meeting rooms of various configurations for extended periods of time.
2. Facility to see and read, with or without vision aids, a computer screen, and printed matter, and to distinguish colors.
3. Facility to hear and understand speech at normal room levels, and to hear and understand speech on the telephone.
4. Manual dexterity to operate a telephone.
5. Facility to speak in audible tones so that others may understand clearly in normal conversations, in training sessions, presentations, other meetings and on the telephone.
6. Physical agility to lift up to 25 pounds to shoulder height, and up to 50 pounds to waist height; and to bend, to stoop, to climb stairs and to reach overhead.
7. Facility to drive a car.
8. Mental acuity to: perform the essential functions of this position in an accurate, neat, and timely fashion; to make good judgments and decisions; and to evaluate the results of decisions and judgments.
9. Manual dexterity to operate recording devices, operate equipment and handle animals and plants relative to the displays, exhibits, demonstrations, investigations and interpretative activities.
10. Physical ability to walk over uneven terrain.
11. Facility to drive a car.
