Arts and Crafts Intern
JOB SUMMARY
Camp Hapitok is a residential summer camp for children, ages 6-11, with communication disorders who live in San Luis Obispo County. The Arts and Crafts Intern will prepare instructional materials, purchase needed supplies, insure safety, enforce camp rules, and provide routine clerical support. The Arts and Crafts Intern will teach arts and crafts lessons related to the camp theme. In addition, the Arts and Crafts Intern will perform other related duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS
Required:
1. High School diploma plus college level coursework in child development and education.
2. Experience working with children, ages 6-18.
3. Valid California driver’s license.
Desirable:
1. Experience working with children who have communication disorders.
2. Experience working in a residential camp setting.
3. Knowledge of sign language.
4. Experience in leadership roles.
KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES
Knowledge of:
1. Child guidance principles and practices related to children with communication disorders.
2. Classroom procedures and appropriate student conduct.
Ability to:
1. Assist with instruction and related activities in a classroom or assigned learning environment.
2. Reinforce instruction with individual or small groups of special education/communicatively disordered campers as directed by the Speech Therapists, Teacher of Deaf and Hard of Hearing, and Camp Director.
3. Assist in the preparation of instructional materials and implementation of IEP’s.
4. Perform a variety of clerical duties including typing, filing, and duplicating materials.
5. Understand and relate to students with special needs and communication disorders.
6. Establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationship with others.
7. Communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
8. Demonstrate an understanding, patient and receptive attitude toward special education students.
9. Understand and follow oral and written instructions.
10. Operate standard office and classroom equipment including a computer.
11. Observe health and safety regulations.
12. Demonstrate interpersonal skills using tact, patience and courtesy.
13. Maintain regular and reliable attendance.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
1. Communicate orally and in writing with campers in order to model speech and language skills.
2. Have the physical ability to supervise teen and campers in an outdoor environment.
3. Must be able to hike on trails.
4. Participate in swimming at a public pool.
5. Be able to make correct monetary change.
6. Have basic knowledge and understanding of learning styles.
7. Have a basic knowledge of child development.
8. Be creative and able to plan various arts and crafts activities related to the theme.
9. Assist in preparing instructional materials and implementing Individualized Education Plans (IEP’s) while working with children ages 6-11 in small groups or on an individual basis.
10. Observe and control behavior of campers according to approved procedures during both indoor and outdoor activities.
11. Load and unload campers on buses as directed.
12. Assist students with adaptive devices as needed.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
1. Dexterity of hands and fingers to operate standard office and classroom equipment.
2. Sitting or standing for extended periods of time.
3. Bending at the waist, kneeling or crouching to assist students.
4. Seeing to read a variety of materials and monitor student activities.
5. Hearing and speaking to exchange information.
6. Physical agility to lift 25 pounds to shoulder height and 50 pounds to waist height. Kneeling or crouching to assist students and carrying, pushing or pulling heavy objects.
7. Mental acuity to perform essential functions of this position neatly, accurately and in a timely fashion. Additionally, must be able to make good decisions and evaluate the results, thereof.
8. Facility to drive a car.
RESPONSIBLE TO
1. Collaborate with activity staff.
2. Submit lesson plans and reports to camp director.
COMPENSATION
$900 stipend is provided by the Friends of Hapitok. Room and board are available Monday- Friday noon.
