Teacher of the Deaf/Hard of Hearing


JOB SUMMARY
 
Camp Hapitok is a residential summer camp for 6 to 11 year old children with communication disorders who live in San Luis Obispo County. The teacher of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing will have fluent signing skills. The teacher of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing will work with 7-10 children between the ages of 6 and 11 who are communicatively handicapped due to hearing impairment or other reasons. The teacher of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing will develop appropriate goals according to each child’s communication strengths and weaknesses. The teacher of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing will see each child individually or in a group 4-5 times per week for 30 minutes per session.  The teacher of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing will supervise and train teen volunteers to work with their assigned camper.  As well as perform other related duties as assigned.
 
QUALIFICATIONS
 
Required:
1. Valid California teaching credential authorizing Communication Handicapped Services or equivalent.
2. Ability to use and understand sign language.
3. Valid driver's license.
4. Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing.
 
Desirable:
1. Experience working with and teaching Deaf and Hard of Hearing children.
2. An established pattern of professional growth.
3. Experience with elementary through high school age children.
 
KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES
 
Knowledge of:
1. Child guidance principles and practices related to children with communication disorders and hearing impairments.
2. Classroom procedures and appropriate student conduct.
 
Ability to:
1. Assess children to determine specific speech and language strengths and weaknesses.
2. Work with communicatively handicapped children in a one-on-one or small group situation on their speech, language, and hearing goals.
3. Prepare instructional materials and implement IEP’s.
4. Understand and relate to students with special needs and communication disorders.
5. Establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationship with teen volunteers and staff.
6. Communicate effectively both verbally, in writing, and using sign language.
7. Demonstrate an understanding, patient and receptive attitude toward special education students.
8. Understand and follow oral and written instructions.
9. Observe health and safety regulations.
10. Demonstrate interpersonal skills using tact, patience and courtesy.
11. Maintain regular and reliable attendance.
 
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
 
1. Communicate orally, in writing, and using sign language with campers in order to model speech and language skills.
2. Have a strong knowledge and understanding of learning styles.
3. Have a strong knowledge of child development.
4. Assess children to determine specific speech and language strengths and weaknesses.
5. Prepare instructional materials and implement Individualized Education Plans (IEP’s) while working with children ages 6-12 in small groups or on an individual basis.
6. Maintain records and student files related to attendance, progress, medications, IEP’s, behavior and assigned activities.
7. Prepare mandated reports and documentation as required.
8. Observe and control behavior of campers according to approved procedures during both indoor and outdoor activities.
9. Provide appropriate feedback to teens about their work with the campers.
 
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
 
1. Dexterity of hands and fingers to operate standard office and classroom equipment as well as use sign language for extended periods of time.
2. Sitting or standing for extended periods of time.
3. Bending at the waist, kneeling or crouching to assist students.
4. Seeing to read a variety of materials and monitor student activities.
5. Hearing and speaking to exchange information.
6. Physical agility to lift 25 pounds to shoulder height and 50 pounds to waist height. Kneeling or crouching to assist students and carrying, pushing or pulling heavy objects.
7. Mental acuity to perform the essential functions of this position in an accurate, neat, and timely fashion; to make good judgments and decisions; and to evaluate the results of decisions and judgments.
8. Facility to drive a car.
